In his inaugural speech, Lula said he resumes his commitment to rebuild and unite Brazil. Bolsonaro, Lula’s predecessor, left a country with record-high deforestation rates, diplomatic animosities and economic growth predictions ranging from 0,64% to 1% for 2023. And although Bolsonaro is no longer in power, the Brazilian far-right have seats in both Congress and Senate, and still has the support of many Brazilians, as the terror attacks of 8th January indicate. The Norwegian Solidarity Committee with Latin America (LAG) has invited Brazilian investigative journalist Leandro Demori to meet LAG's chairwoman Larissa Avelar and take a close look on the latest developments in Brazilian politics since Lula’s inauguration, as well as perspectives for the rest of the term. The conversation will be held in English. About Leandro Demori: Leandro Demori is the former editor of The Intercept Brazil, when he lead the investigation on the Car Wash leaks, a scandal showing the cooperation between judge and prosecution in the criminal case against Lula. He has published the books “Cosa Nostra in Brazil: The Mafia Boss Who Brought Down an Empire” (2020) and “Mafia and Militia: Rio Conexion: When Italians Crossed the Atlantic” (2023).
