Despite being a predominantly Catholic and conservative region, several Latin American
countries have alleged significant progress in recognising and protecting gender rights. How
much of that legislation has actually been implemented, and what challenges remain? How do
inequality and poverty affect the protection of LGBTIQ+ people?
As the reactionary discourse of the far right spreads transnationally through social media, how
do communities defend themselves and organise to confront systemic discrimination and hate
speech?

This Sunday, 14 September, as part of Trondheim Pride, Juan Grajales (he/him) and Colin Bojer
(he/they) will discuss perspectives and experiences from Colombia and Brazil on human rights,
inequality, and queer activism in a society that is increasingly polarised and influenced by the
“anti-woke” narrative affecting both Latin America and the rest of the world.

Colin Bojer is a Norwegian artist and activist who has served as a queer-rights brigadista in
Brazil with the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST). Juan Grajales is a Colombian writer and
activist in exile in Norway; he is the leader of the Latin-Amerikagruppene i Norge (LAG i Norge).
