What is the history behind land reform in Brazil?
Brazil has been characterized by an enormous land inequality since the Portuguese invasion. On paper, Brazil is a modern democracy today, but in practice, the feudal land distribution model has never ceased. Marginalized community groups, such as people of color and the poor, are the most disadvantaged. In the aftermath of Brazil's 20-year dictatorship, MST was founded.
Meet Alexandre Gomes da Silva! He is a solidarity brigadist with LAG this year. He has focused heavily on education and mobilization in his work and is active in the LGBT community, the human rights collective, and the regional coordinating group of MST in the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. He will share insights into MST's organizational structure and strategy for providing access to land through land occupations!
