From the territories of Chile comes Corporación Traitraico, an artistic collective carrying the living memory of the Mapuche, Selk'nam, Kawésqar and Yagán peoples. A tour crossing Oslo, Telemark and Sápmi to build bridges between two nations with indigenous peoples still fighting for their territories and culture. LAG invites you to be part of it. They will be in Norway until 20 May.

About the project

Voces Ancestrales en Noruega: Proyecciones de Memoria // Ancestral Voices in Norway: Projections of Memory is an artistic and cultural exhibition driven by Corporación Traitraico, a Chile-based collective that has worked in collaboration with artists and indigenous communities in Patagonia and the southern zone. The project is funded by the Chilean Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, and comes to Norway thanks to a broad network of collaborating organisations led by LAG — the Norwegian Committee of Solidarity with Latin America.

The tour visits three Norwegian territories with a programme combining photography, video art, micro-documentary, conversation and performance, opening an urgent dialogue between experiences of indigenous resistance in the southern world.

This is Corporación Traitraico's first international exhibition and the first time this project has been developed collaboratively with artists and professionals of different nationalities, institutions and organisations abroad.

The program

The exhibition includes five formats presented in different combinations throughout the tour:

  1. Photography exhibition — A selection of 20 photographs documenting collaborative work in Mapuche, Selk'nam, Kawésqar and Yagán territories in Patagonia and the southern region of Chile.

  2. Video art — In-room projections exploring the ritual and ancestral: the Ngen Ko (water spirits) and the ceremonial centre Ngen Kintuantu (the spiritual force that seeks the sun).

  3. Micro-documentaries — Five audiovisual works: Territorio Ancestral (Ancestral Territory), Pilmaiken Resiste (Pilmaiken Resists), Relatos de Fuego (Tales of Fire), Relatos de Mar (Tales of the Sea) and Relatos de Bosque (Tales of the Forest), with subtitles in English and some indigenous languages.

  4. Conversation — Open meeting with the project's artists to discuss research, creation and cultural management from the territories.

  5. Collective audiovisual performance — With invited artists, poetry, visual art and live music.
